What is Kinesiology?

Kinesiology for the development of physical fitness and health.

To better understand your current abilities and limitations, our kinesiologists check how your joints move. They look for any movement or postural compensations that might make other parts of your body do too much or hurt. They also watch how you move to see if you can control your body well in functional movements like the squat or pushup.

With all this information, our kinesiologists make a plan just for you. This plan focuses on safe exercises that will help you get stronger and more coordinated. Their goal is to help you reach your full potential quickly and safely.

Fascial Stretch Therapy

In order to understand Fascial Stretch Therapy you first need to know what fascia is! Fascia is an important piece of connective tissues that connects your muscles, tendons, ligaments, bones, and organs together. In respect to your movement and health, it is one of the limiting factors for hypomobility or the feeling of stiffness. Fascia connects chains of muscles together (known as fascial trains). Muscles connected by the same piece of fascia often work together to produce locomotion. When one part of the fascia is stiff it can negatively impact another area of the body.

Fascial stretch therapy is a form of assisted stretching techniques used by our certified kinesiologists to 'loosen up' fascial trains. They do so by stretching out multiple muscles at the same time in a rhymical fashion. This is often combined with muscle energy techniques such as Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation and Post Isometric Relaxation.

  • What's the difference between a Personal Trainer and Kinesiologist?

Generally speaking, all kinesiologists can be personal trainers but not all personal trainers can be kinesiologists. At Rehab Hero, our certified experts do BOTH. Personal trainers and kinesiologists check your needs, make a program, and guide you through personalized exercises. However, the big difference comes if you have a complicated injury or health issue. If you need someone with a scientific background or specialized training in athletic therapy, understanding the difference between kinesiologists and personal trainers is crucial.

    Education:

Personal trainers may have a certification that can take a few weeks or months to earn. They learn about fitness theory, and weight training.

Kinesiologists, on the other hand, have a four-year bachelor’s degree in kinesiology or human kinetics. They study anatomy, physiology, rehab, and biomechanics in depth. They also continue their education with workshops and courses like Functional Range Conditioning and Fascial Stretch Therapy.

    Scope of Practice:

A personal trainer's scope is limited to fitness coaching and basic nutrition advice.

Kinesiologists have a broader scope. They can work in athletic therapy, assess posture, prescribe exercises for injuries, and provide ergonomic assessments in addition to what a typical personal trainer provides. They are trained to work with diverse populations, including those with complex health conditions.

    Work Settings:

Personal trainers are often found in gyms, private studios, or offering classes.

Kinesiologists work not only in gyms and sports facilities but also in hospitals, clinics, and academic settings. They collaborate with physiotherapists, doctors, and chiropractors to help clients with injuries and health conditions.

While personal trainers focus on fitness and basic nutrition, kinesiologists additionally handle complex cases and work in diverse healthcare and academic environments.

The main differences between a Rehab Hero Kinesiologist and a Personal Trainer in Markham are knowing how to manage injuries & conditions, and having a four-year Kinesiology undergraduate degree.

All Kinesiologists are registered and regulated under the same government healthcare rules as physiotherapists, massage therapists and chiropractors. They operate under a greater degree of scrutiny than what's needed for a personal trainer.

At Rehab Hero, Kinesiologists provide personal training services through Performance Therapy. These services can help with losing fat and gaining muscles.
